2019 - Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: Main Street Antiques

Image
Main Street Antiques is a family-owned business and has been participating in the gingerbread tour since it's inception in 2012. They hire Muddy Bees Bakery each year to make their gingerbread creation. This year was no exception. I am told that each year, there is always a hidden bee somewhere within the creation, but this year, they covered the gingerbread house with little bees and it's my favorite 😁 The Shoppe is feeling festive, they have an amazing gingerbread creation on display and yummy complimentary peanut clusters coming soon. Such a fun time of year! When one really enjoys the vintage life, what better way to live it than to shop local, shop small, support this small mom n pop antique shop. Truly a way to shop green than to give in to the consumerism machine. Plus, it's just plain fun to take a trip down memory lane, see quality workmanship of the furniture from an earlier time. See the old toys that used to be at grandma's house and reminisce of da...

Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: Menchie's Frozen Yogurt

Image
The very first frozen dessert I had when I moved back to Southern Utah, was from here: Menchie's Frozen Yogurt. I think part of the draw to this place, is the cheerful colors and that Menchie yogurt swirly spoon logo guy. It's cute. Plus, the kids could color and try and win free yogurt. It's a great location, so centrally located, too. After living here for about 4.5 years now, my daughter finally won herself a free frozen yogurt by having the best coloring page in June. I think it was June. It was back in summer. She was very excited. Menchie's has won Best Frozen Yogurt in the state of Utah for 5 years! They do this by serving 14 rotating flavors and 60+ toppings. They have excellent service and a clean establishment.  Menchie's Frozen Yogurt has been a strong supporter of many local events. They have a special going on right now. When you purchase a $25 gift card, you get a $5 bonus for yourself. Yippee. Perfect Stocking Stuffer So, what is yo...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: The Iglesias Family

Image
Tell me about yourself. We are the Iglesias family, (Monica, Beyza, Kaylie, and Frank),  friends of The Haven Assisted Living Center. We are not professional bakers, far from it. But we are a creative and artistic bunch. We saw an opportunity to help out doing something we love, so we embraced it to have some quality mother/daughter time together, and even my husband pitched in. Beyza is 14 and was the Landscape Architect on the project and all decisions went through her. Monica, the mother, was the baker, building architect, and co-creator. Monica is also an Author of Child Empowerment books, a Singer, and a Resin Artist 435-215-8994. Monica has a resin art workshop coming up this week if anyone is interested.  And her books can be found here .  The Haven at Sky Mountain is listed as a number 19 on our tour map. It is in Hurricane. Hurry out there and vote for it. All votes will win a prize. Here are some of Monica's resin art pieces: Thank y...

Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: M&S Turquoise

Image
Have you ever wondered about what the M&S stands for in M&S Turquoise? I have - so I asked. M stands for Milne and S for Sevy. These two men started the M&S Turquoise wholesale business. Okay, let's back up a little bit. Let me give you a brief history in a nutshell. I am at the M&S Turquoise retail showroom talking to Brett Sevy, son of Mark Sevy. He is telling me the history. He said that a long time ago when he was a little kid, his dad and mom went to Hurricane with a briefcase full of Native American jewelry and arts, turquoise and silver type jewelry. They were wondering if anyone would be interested in this stuff. So, they took it to Hurricane to try and sell, and they sold all of it! So they thought, people must like this stuff and started the business. At first, it was mostly wholesale and they sold in Las Vegas. Brett grew up there and he describes the place as having a lot of crime so the family moved back up to St. George. At first, they just so...

Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: St George Dinosaur Discovery Site

Image
The mission of the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm (SGDS) is to research, preserve, interpret, and exhibit the fossil resources of the area and the story of this specific site for the benefit, education, and enjoyment of our valued communities and the scientific world.  The history of the museum begins in 2000, when local optometrist, Dr. Sheldon Johnson, was leveling a hill on his property. After removing several feet of topsoil, he came across a thick sandstone layer. This layer was the “paleontological jackpot”: dinosaur footprints! Dr. Johnson and his wife, LaVerna, decided to share the tracks with the world, opening their farm to the public. Within a few months, trained paleontologists from around the state, plus hundreds of volunteers, helped uncover thousands of fossils. Utah Paleontologist, Jim Kirkland has said, “The St. George track site is not only the oldest Jurassic dinosaur site in Utah, and it is also the best basal Jurassic track site in we...

Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: Reclaimed

Image
Jen Hawkins is the woman behind Reclaimed. She is a crafty genius who started out with a side business sewing Renaissance clothing - pieces that were shipped all over the country. About 6 1/2 years ago she got into painting furniture in her living room. She started collecting as she became absorbed into this new passion. And then, she got kicked out of the garage. So, about 5 years ago, she opened up shop out on Industrial Rd across from Rowdy's Range. And then, a big opportunity came about 4 years ago - she was able to get a prime location right on St. George Blvd. Her little business started out as "Jen's Furniture Rehab" - but it has since rebranded to Reclaimed.  She didn't always work in retail. Before owning and operating her own business, Jen worked for Intermountain Healthcare for 15 years. She says, despite retail having tough days, she could never go back to the corporate world where she worked before. Doing what she is passionate about makes life ...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Coleen Sevy

Image
This year Coleen will be baking a gingerbread creation for M&S Turquoise, same as last year. M&S Turquoise is listed as number 8 on the map. M&S Turquoise is a supplier and wholesaler of Native American and Southwest Jewelry and Crafts.  Tell us about Coleen. As a young girl, Coleen grew up learning to cook with her mom. Her mom always said that she wasn’t so fond of cooking as eating something that tasted good. So everything that came from her mom’s kitchen was not only tasty but looked divine. From this tutoring, Coleen has developed a love and respect for the beauty of food and bounty. Her favorite moments are sitting together as a family with a beautiful meal or dessert to share together. Sometimes she feels the need to experiment with her creative energy and participate in events such as the Jubilee of trees, where she has decorated trees for many years as well as gingerbread houses etc. This is her second year entering a display in the gingerbread tour a...
