Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: Premier Dental

Image
The dentist I go to was one of the first businesses to respond in the affirmative that they would participate in the St George Gingerbread House Parade. Premier Dental cares a lot about this community and the people in it. I have had extensive dental work done by them and I have been so happy with the value and care they have shown to me and my family.  If you are new to town and looking for a new dentist, or not new to town, but still looking for a new dentist, I recommend Dr. Baker and his team at Premier Dental.  Dr. Baker with two from the Team - with a greeting for Veterans Day.  Contact information: Facebook Address:  352 E Riverside Dr, Ste C1 St. George, Utah Phone:   (435) 628-0621 Premier Dental is listed as number 15 on the tour map and volunteer baker Erica Mangum is assigned to display her gingerbread house creation here. Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: Downtown Farmers Market

Image
The Downtown Farmers Market started 11 years ago by the owner of the Painted Pony restaurant in Ancestor Square. She saw a need for it and it has only grown since then.  Last year it was taken over by newcomer Kat McCracken Puzey and she has grown it to what it is today. Generally, it runs May through October on Saturday mornings at Ancestor Square in downtown St. George. But, due to popular demand, there is now a second market held during the week, on Wednesday 4:00 to 7:00 PM indoors and year-round. It is held at West Village, 214 N. 1000 E, St. George, UT. The Downtown Farmers Market is also co-sponsoring a Small Business Saturday, this November 30th at Atwood Innovation Plaza, DSU Business Resource Center, 453 S. 600 E. St. George, Utah, 9:00 AM -12:00 PM.  Kat is a business-savvy woman that aims to grow the market, support local artisans and farmers alike. When she isn't busy with the Farmers Market, she loves raising her own chickens, weaving - (she has a fe...

Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: St George Children's Museum

Image
On this Thanksgiving Day, I am grateful for an amazing children's museum in our little community of St. George, Utah. For the last three years, the children's museum has hosted a gingerbread tour to raise funds for the museum. This year they decided not to do it as it had some time and budget constraints. It is a non-profit after all. As soon as I learned about it not happening, I got a little bit sad because I wanted to help promote the event... but that's when I got the idea, to do just that! Gingerbread house creation made by Ginger Farnsworth for the SGCM in 2017 I registered with the State of Utah, the St George Gingerbread House Parade (nonprofit) - also known as St George Gingerbread Parade and Gingerbread Parade. Then, I set this whole thing in motion, to again support the St George Children's Museum. But why them? Let's learn a little bit about this great organization. The mission of the "St. George Children’s Museum is to provide vibrant ...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Michelle Joines

In her own words: I love cooking healthy whole food from scratch.  It started as a young girl watching my mom bake as she ground her own flour.   I started making gingerbread houses 7 years ago when my husband made a deal with my kids not to eat sugar for a year.  So with all their trick or treat candy we made a gingerbread house and donated it to a charity.  I have been making gingerbread houses from their trick or treat candy and donating them ever since!  This is my first year in the Gingerbread Parade.  This year my Young Women are helping me as I teach them the art of making a real gingerbread house from scratch.  My real passion is cooking yummy healthy food and helping others on their journey to better health!   It looks like a great use of Halloween Candy. I see some Tootsie Rolls and Mike n Ikes among other candies here. Michelle Joines has an archive of healthy recipes at Green Kale and Yams . Michelle's ...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Frances Sellers

Image
In her own words: My mother instilled in me a love for baking....my first cake on my own was for Grandmother; she loved yellow cake with chocolate frosting.  My favorite thing to bake is birthday cakes for children; I love to watch their little faces light up.   I decided to get involved with this year to help the Children's Museum; our children are our future and anything that can help to ensure they grow up with creative minds and imaginations is a great cause. I have been doing Gingerbread displays for the Jubilee of Trees for the past 5 years; my two granddaughters Ayden Hansen and Mandi Waddell have helped with them. It is a great learning experience for them and teaches them to give without getting something back. Here is a pic of the two girls with last year's display: it is simply called: "Christmas on the Cape." With Ayden and Mandi Frances together with her granddaughters will again bake and decorate their gingerbread hous...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Mary Shipley

Image
I have access to some of the coolest people in Southern Utah because I am in the Girl Scouts. I met Mary at a Girl Scouts Summer Camp in Provo Canyon's Trefoil Ranch and she is so much fun. Mary has been with Girl Scouts of Utah a little less than a year but loves to see how the organization is growing in Southern Utah. She enjoys baking all kinds of things but has the most fun experimenting with Girl Scout cookie recipes! She is baking and decorating a gingerbread house on behalf of Girl Scouts of Utah. She plans to decorate her gingerbread house with Girl Scout cookies. It will be on display at the Wood Creations store on Tabernacle, number 13 on our tour map.   Here are a couple photos she shares with us today: Close up! The St George Gingerbread Parade runs December 2 - 14th and the gingerbread houses will be on display at 21 participating area businesses. On the afternoon of December 14th, all 21 gingerbread houses will be available to purchase via silent ...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Katelyn Storey

Image
Tell me how you got into baking. I decorated my very first cookie in February of this year, they weren’t great, but I was hooked from the start and determined to get better because I knew I wanted to decorate cookies for my son's first birthday this winter. I practiced again for St Patrick’s Day, then Easter, and then had my very first order in May for a baby shower. I love that this is something I am able to do while staying home with my baby boy. What is your favorite thing to bake? It’s hard to pick a favorite. I enjoy royal icing because I love being able to create something custom and special for each person who orders.  My “cracked” cookies are much quicker and easier, and I have so much fun coming up with new flavors. I have also recently started learning to bake Macarons, which are so tricky! But I really like the challenge and pushing myself to get better. I can say without a doubt, baking cakes is my least favorite. Something about getting buttercream perfectly smoo...

Gingerbread Parade - Participating Business Spotlight: Bank of Utah Home Loans

Image
In Southern Utah, we are really lucky to have so many great businesses that contribute to our overall happiness. Imagine doing something really big that could be so frustrating like buying a home. We don't do this all on our own. We use a good realtor team and to make sure the actual "buying" goes smoothly, it's best to have a good mortgage team on your side, too.  I recently found out that Bank of Utah Home Loans was recently-nominated “Best of Southern Utah” home mortgage company in the region as determined by area residents. That is a pretty big deal.  I have been in touch with the area manager here, Brian Young and he has said “We can compete on anything. It makes a big difference.”  Young, who has been in the industry for 20 years, said that a lot of people think if they go to a bank, the price is going to be higher and they will be charged more fees, but that’s not true. Since Young’s branch is local – located in downtown St. George – but is still under t...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Kimberly Jackson

Image
In her own words: I am really NOT a baker.  I am an artist that was having fun. :)  Last year I did the Tajmahal. Her roots are in Indiana where she graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Purdue University, and a BFA in Illustration and Animation from the Art Institute of Boston. She progressed through oil abstracts (Creating wall-size murals that sold internationally.), acrylic, watercolor, medical illustration using digital renderings, and gouache. Several years ago Kimberly started to do creative, anatomically correct food dishes for Halloween. Then last year she progressed to...

Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Erica Mangum

Image
In her own words: I started creating my kid's birthday cakes 10 years ago. I would watch and help my mother-in-law deliver cakes. After my mother-in-law moved away I started making my kids’ birthday cakes then family birthdays and holidays. I liked it so much I started doing cakes for friends and now I do them for every occasion. A lot of people wanted to see my creations. So I decided to create a Facebook and Instagram page.  My favorite thing to bake is definitely anything cake! It’s so fun to think of new designs and create them.   Check out my work.   Instagram: Ericascakecreations Facebook: Ericascakecreations Erica Mangum is assigned to make a gingerbread house creation to be displayed at Premier Dental. Be sure and check it out Dec 2-13 and vote for your favorites. Gingerbread Parade - Volunteer Baker Spotlight: Caitlin Reber

Image
In her own words: When I was little, my mom would make the most amazing birthday cakes and I started making cakes and desserts when I was in high school.  I took one Wilton cake decorating class but other than that I am YouTube taught.  A favorite Christmas memory from my childhood in northern Utah was going to the large mall in Salt Lake City where during the Christmas season there would be elaborate displays made of candy in the store windows. I think that inspired my love of gingerbread houses,  and they have been a favorite part of Christmas celebrations as an adult.  For the first time last year, I donated a couple of (graham cracker) gingerbread houses to Intermountain healthcare’s Jubilee of trees and I am looking forward to this new opportunity to challenge myself for the gingerbread house parade. A sample of her work:  Caitlin Reber is assigned to make a gingerbread house creation to be displayed at Stephen Wade Honda Mazda. B...
